Bystanders rush to rescue passengers after small plane crashes on Texas highway, killing 1
Small Plane Crash on Texas Highway Sparks Community Rescue Effort
Bystanders rush to rescue passengers after – On Tuesday evening, a compact jet with six occupants collided with a highway in South Texas, resulting in the death of one individual. The incident occurred on Loop 20 in Laredo, where the aircraft came to rest on its side after a fiery crash, according to local authorities and on-site footage. Emergency responders and bystanders quickly mobilized to extract survivors from the wreckage, creating a chaotic yet coordinated effort to save lives amid the smoke and debris.
Rescue Operations Amid the Flames
The crash disrupted traffic in both directions, scattering wreckage across multiple lanes of the highway. Firefighters and police officers arrived shortly after the plane lost contact with air traffic controllers, as reported by Laredo police spokesperson Jose Baeza. Witnesses described the scene as a blur of flashing lights and shouting voices, with the fuselage positioned awkwardly over a concrete divider and part of the aircraft lodged on a nearby ramp.
“We saw the flames. … When we were getting closer, we saw the nose of the aircraft and we’re like, ‘What? This is an aircraft?’” said Zayra Garza, who and her husband were driving on Loop 20 when they first spotted the crash. “I just couldn’t believe there was a plane in the middle of the loop and it was (broken) in half.”
Garza and her husband were among the first to reach the scene. Her husband dashed across the median to assist those trapped inside, while Garza worked to pry open the plane’s windshield. “They were banging on the windshield and trying to get out the door, but it was too heavy,” she recounted. The combined efforts of law enforcement and onlookers eventually allowed the door to be pushed open, revealing desperate calls for help from the trapped passengers.
Victims and Survivors Identified
Authorities confirmed that the crash resulted in one fatality, Josh Baer, a prominent figure in Austin’s tech and startup ecosystem. A statement from Capital Factory, the company Baer co-founded, highlighted his contributions: “He dedicated his life to helping entrepreneurs turn their ideas into reality. His impact on the city of Austin, the state of Texas, and the countless founders he supported cannot be overstated.”
Senator Ted Cruz of Texas praised Baer’s legacy, calling his influence “incalculable.” “Josh has been one of the most significant figures driving innovation and entrepreneurship across America,” Cruz said. “In Texas, he made our state a global leader.”
The five survivors included two pilots and three teenagers, as stated by Laredo Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez. All were transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Firefighters also discovered a small pet trapped in the wreckage, which they successfully rescued. At least one person from a vehicle that was struck by the aircraft was also taken to the hospital but later released, Baeza added.
Flight Details and Mechanical Failure
Flight data from FlightRadar24 revealed that the plane, a NetJets-operated Cessna Citation Latitude, departed San José del Cabo, Mexico, at approximately 6:18 p.m. local time. Its intended destination was Austin, Texas, but the flight was diverted toward Laredo due to mechanical issues reported to the local airport tower shortly before 10 p.m.,” Baeza explained.
According to Laredo International Airport Director Gilberto Sanchez, the aircraft experienced a critical mechanical failure prior to the crash. The flight data showed a steady, controlled descent toward the airport until the signal cut out around 600 feet above the ground, roughly 2.5 miles short of the runway. “The plane lost contact with air traffic controllers before it crashed on the highway,” Sanchez noted in a statement to KGNS.
NetJets, the operator of the aircraft, confirmed it is collaborating with local law enforcement to gather more details about the incident. The company has also deployed crisis response teams and provided support to the affected families. “Our immediate concern is for the well-being of our Crewmembers, our passengers, and their families during this time,” NetJets stated in a press release.
Community Response and Broader Context
Garza emphasized the collective effort of the community, noting that bystanders prioritized rescuing the passengers over their own safety. “It looked like everybody was not even thinking about themselves but thinking about getting those people out safe,” she said. The incident has sparked discussions about aviation safety and the unpredictable nature of mechanical failures, especially in regions with heavy traffic.
Authorities have not yet released details about the injuries of the five officers who were also involved in the rescue operation. The crash marks the fourth major aviation accident in the U.S. within a four-day span, raising questions about the frequency of such incidents. While the exact cause of the mechanical failure remains under investigation, the FAA’s records indicate the aircraft was manufactured in 2016 and had a wingspan of 72 feet, capable of cruising at speeds exceeding 500 mph.
As the investigation continues, the community of Laredo remains focused on supporting the survivors and honoring the life lost. CNN has contacted the Laredo International Airport for additional updates, including any ongoing assessments of the aircraft’s condition and potential factors contributing to the crash. The event has left a lasting impression on those who witnessed it, underscoring the importance of quick action in emergencies.
The crash serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with air travel, even in well-maintained aircraft. With the FAA and local agencies working to determine the cause, the incident highlights the need for continuous monitoring of mechanical systems and the critical role of public cooperation in saving lives. For now, the focus remains on recovery and understanding how such a dramatic event unfolded in the heart of a busy Texas highway.
