Ultra-marathon champion dies while running Cape Wrath trail
Ultra-Marathon Runner Dies During Cape Wrath Challenge
David Parrish, a 35-year-old ultra-marathon athlete from Dumfries, passed away during a run in the Scottish Highlands. The tragic incident occurred while he was attempting to set a new record for completing the Cape Wrath trail, a 234-mile (376km) course stretching from Fort William to Cape Wrath.
Parrish was discovered in the remote Kintail region of the northwest Highlands around 10:25 PM Saturday. Police Scotland confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances and that his family had been informed of the situation.
A Legacy of Endurance
The Cape Wrath trail, which crosses challenging terrains such as Lochaber, Knoydart, Applecross, and Torridon, is recognized as one of the UK’s most grueling routes. Despite only competing in races for a few years, Parrish had previously triumphed in the 2023 edition of the event.
Parrish’s latest effort on the trail was part of a fundraising campaign for Scottish Mountain Rescue, inspired by the memory of his close friend Luke Ireland. The 20-year-old Royal Marine from Monifeith had died in November 2014 while exploring the Glen Clova mountains in Angus.
On his fundraising page, Parrish expressed gratitude for the mountain rescue volunteers who had relentlessly searched for Luke, noting that they were “always on standby to assist in emergencies across Scotland’s mountainous and remote regions.”
Significant contributions have been collected through the charity page, accompanied by numerous tributes to Parrish’s dedication and spirit. His journey as a runner began in his late teens, evolving into competitive races in his early twenties, where he participated in multiple local 5km and 10km events.
As a member of the Dumfries Running Club, he had previously claimed the club championship in 2022. After enlisting in the Royal Marines, he once mentioned that running served as a means to unwind from the pressures of military duty. Following his service, he turned to Parkruns and completed the Cape Wrath Trail in 2021.
A photograph of Parrish during the 2023 Cape Wrath event was taken by No Limits Photography. The company’s founders, Harriet D’Alessio and Christiaan Le Roux, shared their condolences on Tuesday, highlighting his impact on the community.
