Trump Warns UK Trade Deal ‘Can Always Be Changed’
Donald Trump, the U.S. president, emphasized that the trade agreement with the United Kingdom is subject to revision at any time. During an interview with Sky News on Wednesday, he stated the deal “can always be changed,” suggesting flexibility in the partnership. Trump praised the agreement as better than what he had to offer, but his tone hinted at dissatisfaction with the UK’s recent actions.
“We gave them a good trade deal, better than I had to,” he remarked, though the sentiment was tempered by criticism of the relationship’s recent performance.
Trump’s remarks followed tensions with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, whom he has consistently criticized for not supporting the U.S.-Israel conflict against Iran in late February. The leader of the UK, he claimed, had failed to provide the necessary backing during critical moments. Yet, he insisted that these issues would not detract from the significance of King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s upcoming state visit to the United States.
When asked to define the “special relationship,” Trump initially responded with confusion, replying, “With who?” After clarification, he elaborated: “It’s the relationship where when we asked them for help, they were not there. When we needed them, they were not there. When we didn’t need them, they were not there. And they still aren’t there.”
“And we gave them a good trade deal. Better than I had to. Which can always be changed.”
The relationship between the two leaders has grown strained in recent weeks, particularly over their differing stances in the Middle East. Trump previously labeled Starmer as “no Winston Churchill,” highlighting his perceived lack of leadership. Earlier in the conversation, he admitted liking Starmer but criticized his government’s policies on immigration and energy, calling them “insane.”
Despite these criticisms, Trump expressed confidence that the state visit would proceed without complications. “I’ve known the King for a long time, and he’s not involved in that process,” he said. When asked about his anticipation for the royal visit, he replied, “Just being with him. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s wonderful.”
In May of the previous year, the UK became the first nation to finalize a tariff agreement with Trump following his return to office. This deal reduced import duties on vehicles, aluminum, and steel. However, the recent disputes over the Middle East have introduced new challenges to the bilateral ties.
