Aspiring rapper jailed for owning XL bully dogs that mauled mother-in-law two days after ban
Aspiring Rapper Jailed for 10 Years Over XL Bully Attack That Killed Mother-in-Law
A 41-year-old rapper, Ashley Warren, received a 10-year prison sentence after two XL bully dogs under his care mauled his mother-in-law, Esther Martin, 68, to death. The incident occurred just two days after the breed was placed under a new ban. Martin sustained severe injuries, including multiple bites to her back, chest, abdomen, head, and all four limbs.
Background of the Incident
In early February 2024, Warren asked Martin to look after two adult XL bully dogs and eight puppies in Jaywick, Essex, while he traveled to London for a music video shoot. The dogs had not been walked for four weeks, raising concerns about their behavior. According to police, Martin, who stood at 5ft 3in, had mobility issues and no prior experience with the breed.
Prosecution’s Statement
“This tragedy was predictable given Martin’s frail condition and the strength of the XL bully dogs,” stated Christopher Paxton KC, the prosecutor. The case marked a significant moment in the legal battle against the breed, with the court recognizing the danger posed by the dogs.
Victim Impact Statements
Esther Martin’s daughter, Kelly Fretwell, shared the emotional toll of the incident. “The sound of my mother’s screams and the image of her suffering will haunt me forever,” she said. “His actions—and inactions—have cost me a mother and a friend. I wish he had never met my family.”
Another daughter, Sonia Martin-Coppen, described her mother as a “great laugh” with a “wicked sense of humour.” She added: “She was more than a mother to us—she was a sister, an aunt, a great-grandmother. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched.”
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
At Chelmsford Crown Court, Judge Mr Justice Johnson noted that “Esther Martin suffered a catastrophic bleed leading to her death,” emphasizing the foreseeability of the attack. The jury had previously convicted Warren of owning dogs dangerously out of control, which resulted in injury and fatality. He was also found guilty of carrying a knife in public.
Essex Police highlighted the challenges of the case, calling it the first prosecution under the updated XL bully legislation. “No sentence can bring Esther back, but we hope this outcome offers her family some closure,” the police spokesperson said, praising their team’s efforts in the investigation.
Footage of the Attack
Following Warren’s conviction, footage was released showing police officers entering his home on February 3, 2024, after the attack. The video captures the moment the dogs were subdued, underscoring the severity of the situation and the urgency of the response.
