Major Russian Attack on Kyiv Leaves Over a Dozen Dead, Mayor Reports
Major Russian attack on Kyiv kills – Kyiv’s mayor confirmed that over a dozen fatalities occurred during a significant strike on the city overnight into Thursday. The attack, which took place just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a warning about an impending large-scale assault, targeted the capital with a combination of drones and missiles. According to Ukrainian air force officials, Russia deployed nearly 500 drones alongside dozens of missiles as part of a coordinated effort to strike multiple locations simultaneously. Despite the extensive defense measures, approximately 33 of these weapons reached their targets, resulting in over 85 injuries. Among the casualties were at least one child and several medical personnel, who were wounded during an attack on an ambulance substation.
Resident Preparedness and Air Raids
The attack was preceded by a directive from Zelensky on Wednesday, urging residents to “be especially careful” and to respond promptly to air-raid alarms. He warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been “preparing a massive strike against Ukraine for some time,” emphasizing the urgency of the situation. This warning led to a surge in residents seeking shelter, with many taking refuge in metro stations by Wednesday evening. Sirens began ringing at 8 p.m. local time and persisted into the early hours of Thursday, marking an 11-hour sustained bombardment. The city’s military administration head, Tymur Tkachenko, reported that “residential buildings suffered very significant direct hits, and the bodies of the deceased are now being retrieved from under the rubble.”
“There have been very significant direct hits on residential buildings, where, unfortunately, the bodies of the deceased are being recovered from under the rubble,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city’s military administration.
International Response Urged
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, called for decisive international action to counter the escalating threat. “We demand strong international responses. Not only words of condemnation but concrete action to stop Russian terror,” he stated, anticipating that the casualty count would climb further. Russia’s Ministry of Defence, meanwhile, described its operation as a “massive strike using high-precision, long-range weapons,” including drones, aimed at critical infrastructure such as military installations and energy facilities. The attack targeted Kyiv, as well as the Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv regions, though Ukrainian officials claimed that civilian structures, including residential areas, were also hit.
“We demand strong international responses. Not only words of condemnation but concrete action to stop Russian terror,” said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha.
The damage from the strike was visible in real-time footage shared by residents and media. Crumbling buildings, many of which were apartment blocks, were engulfed in flames, while rescuers worked tirelessly through debris and rubble to locate survivors. The attack underscored the ongoing vulnerability of Ukraine’s cities, which have endured near-continuous assaults from Moscow’s aerial forces since the start of the full-scale invasion over four years ago. Despite this, Kyiv has managed to mount a robust defense, with its military actively engaging in counterattacks.
Strategic Countermeasures by Ukraine
Ukraine has intensified its drone campaign against Russia in recent weeks, focusing on high-value targets such as energy infrastructure. Zelensky has positioned these strikes as a pivotal strategy to pressure Moscow into ending the war. Over the past month, the nation has launched a series of long-range drone attacks that have reached deep into Russian territory. Last week, Russia reported intercepting 660 drones across 12 regions, highlighting the scale of Ukraine’s offensive operations since the 2022 invasion.
Among the recent strikes, Kyiv’s forces targeted a major oil refinery in Kstovo, a location hundreds of miles east of Moscow. They also hit a railway bridge over the Donets River, which Ukraine claims serves as a key logistical route for Russian military operations, and a command post in Kharkiv. These attacks have extended the war’s reach beyond the front
