Spain formally dismisses ambassador to Israel amid tensions with Tel Aviv
Spain’s government has officially removed Ana Sálomon from her position as ambassador to Israel. The action was published in the state gazette on Tuesday, following approval by the Council of Ministers. This move means the country will operate its diplomatic mission in Tel Aviv without an ambassador, relying instead on a chargé d’affaires to manage relations.
The decision comes in response to Israel’s earlier steps, including recalling its ambassador to Madrid in May 2024. That followed Spain’s recognition of a Palestinian state, which Israel criticized. Since then, the Israeli ambassador post to Spain has remained unfilled, with Dana Erlich currently leading the diplomatic presence in Madrid.
Background of Strained Relations
Spain’s ambassador, Ana Sálomon, was recalled from Tel Aviv in September 2024 after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced policies to halt what he called a genocide in Gaza. Israel’s response was swift, with Foreign Minister Gideon Saar labeling Sánchez as antisemitic and restricting access for two of his ministers.
“Sánchez’s actions reflect a growing antisemitism within his administration,” stated Gideon Saar, Israel’s foreign minister.
The reciprocal nature of the dispute is evident, as Spain’s move follows Israel’s similar measures. Both nations have reduced their diplomatic footprint in each other’s capitals, signaling a deepening rift despite ongoing efforts to maintain ties.
