Taxi driver ‘attacked passenger for burping in his car’

A Costa del Sol taxi driver was apprehended after allegedly assaulting an Irish tourist for burping during a ride. The incident took place in Fuengirola, a popular holiday destination, where the 65-year-old victim suffered severe head and facial injuries after being punched to the ground by the driver.

The injured passenger was first transported to a health center in Las Lagunas before being moved to the hospital in Marbella. The 51-year-old driver reportedly instructed the unnamed tourist to exit the vehicle following the alleged altercation.

According to witnesses, the Irish passenger struck his head on the curb after being thrown to the ground by the driver. The second tourist involved in the incident remained unscathed, as the confrontation occurred near a hotel on the seaside promenade.

At this time, it remains uncertain whether the injured individual is still in the hospital or their current status is known. The driver was reportedly released on bail after appearing before an investigating judge, with a criminal probe ongoing.

The arrest was made by officers from the National Police rapid response unit, who arrived alongside paramedics. Concerned witnesses are believed to have alerted the emergency services to the incident.

In November last year, a similar case unfolded when a different driver was detained after allegedly dragging a tourist along the road. The tourist was trying to stop him from driving off with his suitcase following a dispute over the fare.

The affected tourist, whose nationality was not revealed, was treated at the same medical facility as the Irish assault victim. The injury occurred when the driver accelerated, causing the individual to lose their grip on the door handle.
