British teen Sky Brown is skateboarding world champion again

Sky Brown, a 17-year-old from the UK, has claimed the skateboarding world championship title once more, following her earlier victory at age 14. Her triumph occurred in Brazil, where she celebrated with her father, Stewart Brown, a former skateboarder, during the event in São Paulo.

“This feels huge and I’m so thankful,” said Brown. “There are bigger things and I just pray for peace for the world.”

The competition in São Paulo faced delays on Sunday due to “adverse weather conditions and recurrent rainfall.” After the finalists completed two of the four scheduled runs, organizers opted to finalize results early as heavy rain made the skatepark unsafe for further runs.

With nearly four points ahead, Brown was officially crowned champion. Japan’s Mizuho Hasegawa secured silver with 84.36 points, while American Minna Stess placed third at 83.90. “The level is crazy. I had to put a lot down to get here, but I am definitely bummed that we couldn’t fully do a final,” Brown remarked after the World Skate announcement.

Winning on International Women’s Day held special significance for Brown. She is now ranked 7th globally, though 15-year-old Hasegawa, who shared a post-win embrace with her, leads the world rankings. Brown previously claimed the title at 14 during the World Championships in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, with a top score of 90.83 from three runs.

Early Career and Olympic Achievements

Born to a Japanese mother, Mieko, and a British father, Stewart Brown, the skateboarder first competed at the US Open in 2016 at age eight. She later chose to represent Great Britain in 2018. At just 13, Brown became Great Britain’s youngest Olympic medalist ever, earning bronze in Tokyo 2020. She followed up with another bronze in the park event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, just a week after dislocating her shoulder.

Skateboarding was introduced as a new Olympic sport in 2020, featuring “park” and “street” disciplines. The competition in São Paulo highlighted Brown’s resilience and skill, cementing her status as a rising star in the sport.
