Republican Sen. Grassley probing FBI Director Patel’s travel and spending
Grassley Questions FBI Director Patel Over Aircraft and Vehicle Expenditures
Republican Sen Grassley probing FBI Director – Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley has formally requested that FBI Director Kash Patel explain his utilization of government aircraft and recent automobile acquisitions. The inquiry, contained within a letter dated May 5 and subsequently obtained by Democrats serving on both the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, signals that the Republican chairman is undertaking independent scrutiny of Patel’s controversial financial decisions involving taxpayer funds. According to the correspondence reviewed by CNN, Grassley has directed Patel to compile a comprehensive inventory of every journey undertaken aboard an FBI aircraft. The chairman wants to know the associated costs for each trip and whether the travel served personal or official functions. Should any flight have been for private purposes, Grassley has asked whether Patel has reimbursed the federal government accordingly.
Vehicle Purchase Analysis Requested
Beyond aircraft usage, the Republican chairman is also pressing Patel to supply a detailed cost comparison between the BMW vehicles purchased and equivalent Chevy suburban models. Additionally, Grassley wants information regarding fuel consumption and storage expenses for these automobiles. The FBI director has become a focal point of controversy, particularly following the viral spread of footage showing him consuming beer inside the Team USA men’s hockey team locker room. This incident occurred after the Olympic gold-medal contest in February, prompting questions about whether Patel utilized FBI resources for what seemed like a fan’s personal excursion. The FBI has defended Patel’s travel arrangements, asserting through a social media statement that “This FBI is more efficient and effective in every way.” The agency further claimed that Patel’s personal travel expenditures remain significantly lower than those of former directors Chris Wray and James Comey. Officials maintained that Patel was in Milan performing official duties, attending six public events and two classified sessions, which included meetings concerning the Olympic security framework.
Historical Context and Regulatory Requirements
A substantial portion of the criticism surrounding Patel’s Olympics journey relates to his employment of an FBI Gulfstream jet for personal travel since assuming his position. This issue has previously affected earlier FBI directors and attorneys general. Notably, Patel himself had criticized the use of the FBI plane by his predecessor Wray before becoming director, suggesting the aircraft should be grounded. During a 2024 appearance on Glenn Beck’s podcast, Patel remarked, “Chris Wray doesn’t need a government-funded G-5 jet to go to vacation.” He added, “Maybe we ground that plane — $15,000 every time it takes off.” However, similar to Wray’s situation, Patel lacks flexibility regarding his travel arrangements. A government regulation established after September 11 mandates that the attorney general, and since 2011 the FBI director, must utilize government aircraft for all journeys, encompassing personal trips as well. The Justice Department explains that this policy ensures the president and other senior officials maintain secure communication channels with the FBI director and attorney general during national security emergencies or other critical situations.
Oversight Efforts Continue
Grassley has provided Patel until May 19 to address the voluntary inquiry. In his letter, the Republican chairman references previous instances where he investigated an FBI director’s spending patterns. “For decades, regardless of which political party is in the White House, I have worked to ensure that taxpayers dollars are protected from waste, fraud, and abuse,” Grassley wrote. This development coincides with House and Senate Democrats initiating their own investigation into Patel’s expenditures, incorporating whistleblower testimonies. On Thursday evening, Grassley criticized Democratic efforts on X, stating, “My oversight is the same no matter the admin UNLIKE Dems who only seem interested in oversight when it benefits them politically.” This story has been updated with additional details. CNN’s Evan Perez and Isabelle Khurshudyan contributed to this report.
