Dogs ‘Doing Really Well’ After 250 Found in Overcrowded Home
Following their rescue from a UK property earlier this year, over 250 poodle-cross dogs are now reported to be thriving, according to the RSPCA. A recent photograph shared by a rescuer highlighted the dire conditions, sparking debate about the authenticity of the image. The charity emphasized that the animals’ recovery has been “remarkable,” despite their initial cramped and stressful living situation.
RSPCA Reports Positive Progress in Rescued Poodle-Cross Dogs
The RSPCA described the situation as having “rapidly escalated beyond control” due to challenging family circumstances. Lee Hopgood, the charity’s operational superintendent for the North of England, noted that “the dogs are thriving and adapting well,” though many were initially found with “matted and crusted coats” requiring veterinary care. Of the animals rescued, 87 were placed under the RSPCA’s care, while the rest were transferred to Dogs Trust for rehoming.
Boone’s Adoption and Recovery
One of the rescued poodle-cross dogs, Boone, has found a new home with Dermot Murphy, a former RSPCA inspectorate commissioner. Murphy shared Boone’s story on BBC Breakfast, revealing the dog arrived underweight and with sore ears and eyes. Initially, Boone struggled with basic tasks like walking on a lead, locking his claws to the floor when first introduced to it. “He’d never been on a lead before,” Murphy explained.
“Now, Boone can be off the lead and play with a ball. It’s just fantastic to see how he’s come out of himself and become part of our family,” Murphy added.
Factors Behind the Overcrowding
The RSPCA linked the incident to a combination of mental health challenges, the cost of living crisis, and poor breeding practices. In this case, the charity chose not to pursue legal action, citing the owners’ “extremely vulnerable nature.” The situation also underscores the growing trend of multi-animal households, with the number of such cases rising by 70% in England and Wales since 2021.
Context and Statistics
The photo of the overcrowded living room, taken by a rescuer, was confirmed by the RSPCA to be genuine, countering social media claims of it being AI-generated. The dogs, all poodle-cross breeds, or “doodles,” have become increasingly popular, ranking among the top three crossbreeds owned, per a 2025 Dogs Trust survey. In November, the RSPCA also rescued 80 dogs, primarily chihuahuas, pomeranians, and cross-breeds, from a Bedfordshire home.
