Macron dismisses Trump’s ‘inelegant’ dig about his marriage

French President Emmanuel Macron responded to remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump during a recent critique of NATO, downplaying the jab about his marital life. Trump had mocked Macron, suggesting his spouse “treats him extremely badly,” as part of a broader attack on alliance commitments. Macron, however, stated that the comment did not warrant a direct reply.

Trump’s Remarks in Context

During a video clip shared by the White House on YouTube—later removed—Trump criticized Macron while discussing NATO allies’ involvement in military actions against Iran. He mimicked a French accent, referencing Macron’s wife as a point of mockery. “We didn’t need them, but I asked anyway,” Trump said. “I call up France, Macron—whose wife treats him extremely badly. Still recovering from the right to the jaw,” he added, alluding to a 2023 incident in Vietnam where Brigitte Macron appeared to shove the French president.

“We can do that after the war is won,” Trump said, echoing Macron’s earlier statement.

Macron’s Counterpoint

Macron rejected the idea that the Middle East conflict should be seen as a spectacle, emphasizing the need for stability. “There is too much talk, and it’s all over the place,” he remarked, criticizing Trump’s approach to warfare. The French leader urged focus on “de-escalation” and a “ceasefire,” calling for calm rather than partisan commentary.

“So I am not going to respond to them— they do not merit a response,” Macron told reporters.

Macron described Trump’s remarks as “neither elegant nor up to standard,” highlighting the disparity between the U.S. president’s tone and his own diplomatic approach. The incident underscores the ongoing tension between the two leaders, with Macron steering the conversation back to shared goals of peace in the region.
