Graham Platner drops Maine Senate bid, clearing way for Democrats to pick new nominee
Platner Halts Maine Senate Campaign Over Assault Claims
Graham Platner drops Maine Senate bid clearing – Graham Platner drops Maine Senate bid, a decision that clears the path for Democrats to select a new nominee for the critical race against Republican incumbent Susan Collins. The Maine Democratic hopeful announced Wednesday he is suspending his campaign operations, citing both personal circumstances and political realities. His withdrawal follows serious allegations from two women who say they were sexually assaulted while intoxicated during separate encounters. Platner has consistently maintained his innocence regarding both accusations.
We believe that for the movement to continue it can’t be me — and for that reason we are suspending campaign operations,
the candidate stated in an eleven-minute video message posted to X, adding that he plans to file official withdrawal documents with state authorities.
Challenging Party Leadership
A significant portion of the video address focused on criticizing Democratic Party leadership. The candidate argued that party officials are leveraging the sexual assault claims to weaken his campaign and the broader progressive movement he represents.
It’s not the false allegations though that have brought us to where we are. It’s the fact that they are being used by the political establishment to put structural pressure on us,
he explained. Platner characterized the situation as a brutal political reality, asserting that those holding power are exploiting the accusations as justification to strip away essential campaign resources. These include fundraising capabilities and access to voter databases.
We were asking for real democracy, and we did it the right way, and we won, but now the ball is in the court of the Democratic establishment,
he declared, emphasizing that the ballot line belongs to Maine voters.
Timeline and Next Steps
As the video message circulated Wednesday evening, the candidate was simultaneously informing his campaign team via video conference. According to a call participant speaking with CNN, Platner remained composed throughout, though his voice occasionally cracked. Several younger members of his staff appeared visibly emotional, with red eyes. The candidate is racing against Maine’s July 13 deadline for general election hopefuls to remove themselves from the ballot. Following his withdrawal, the state Democratic Party has a fourteen-day window to nominate a replacement candidate.
Why This Race Matters
Maine’s Senate contest holds substantial significance for Democratic ambitions of securing a Senate majority during the November midterms. The party requires a net increase of four seats, with the majority of those victories expected to come from traditionally Republican states. Although well-financed Democratic challengers have previously fallen short against Collins, party officials believe a favorable national political climate could improve their prospects this year. This optimism is bolstered by the fact that former Vice President Kamala Harris carried Maine by nearly seven percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.
The Allegations Deepen
The candidate’s standing among Democratic voters deteriorated significantly earlier this week following statements from Jenny Racicot. She alleged that in 2021, Platner arrived at her residence intoxicated despite her request that he not come. Racicot claims he then forcibly had sex with her even as she repeatedly asked him to stop. During the encounter, she said he knocked over a sewing cabinet, which resulted in a needle becoming embedded in her leg. When Racicot confronted the candidate the following morning, she said he claimed no memory of the events. She did not file a police report at the time and ended contact with him shortly thereafter. When asked whether she now views the incident as rape, Racicot responded, “By definition yes, absolutely yes.” In a video statement on Monday, Platner characterized the accusations as “troubling, serious and false” while acknowledging they could complicate his efforts to defeat Collins.
Regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting, but mindful of the political reality it will inflict, we are taking the time to reflect on the best path forward for the state that I love, the people that I love, the movement I belong to, and the goal of defeating Susan Collins,
the Maine Senate hopeful explained.
