Paddington musical dominates Olivier Awards

Paddington Musical Claims Multiple Awards at Olivier Ceremony

The 50th-anniversary Olivier Awards saw the stage adaptation of Paddington, inspired by the beloved books and films, sweep the board with seven accolades. The production, featuring songs by McFly’s Tom Fletcher, secured top honors including best new musical and three acting awards, along with recognition for its direction, costume, and set design.

Highlighting Kindness and Collaboration

Paddington’s co-writer Jessica Swale expressed gratitude for the opportunity to bring the iconic bear to life, calling it “an honour to be entrusted with a very special bear.” Fletcher emphasized the sense of community, describing the cast as “a family” and praising the show’s mission to “celebrate kindness” through its storytelling.

“We tried to make a show that is all about celebrating kindness,” he added, “and to be part of this group of people that is putting that out into the world at this time feels so special, thank you so much.”

Evita’s Star Shines with Modern Twist

US performer Rachel Zegler emerged victorious in the Evita category, marking her second major win after a Golden Globe for reimagining Maria in West Side Story. She highlighted London’s role in her journey, stating, “Thank you so much to the city of London for making me feel so welcome here, I never could’ve imagined it.”

“It was the honour of a lifetime singing to the people on Argyll Street eight times a week,” Zegler said, “I can’t believe I got so lucky to sing in front of thousands of you.”

Accessibility and Opportunity in Theatre

Paapa Essiedu, starring in All My Sons, took home best supporting actor, while Julie Hesmondhalgh won best supporting actress for Punch. Essiedu, who hadn’t attended theatre as a child, credited a youth program by Frantic Assembly for his path to the stage. “Even without formal training or vocabulary, my creativity was nurtured,” he reflected, urging continued support for such initiatives.

“Funding for these programmes is being cut year on year,” Essiedu added, “and I urge everyone in this room, at home, and at governmental level to continue funding these organisations.”

Other Notable Wins

Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods, in a new production, earned two awards, including best musical revival. Meanwhile, Kenrex, a one-man play about a small-town murder, captured recognition for best actor in a play, with Jack Holden triumphing over high-profile names like Bryan Cranston and Tom Hiddleston.

“Most people watching this at home won’t know who I am, which is quite funny,” Holden chuckled, “but to have this is even crazier.”
