Seven arrested at base demo accused of supporting banned group
Suffolk Police reported the detention of seven individuals on Sunday, linking them to the banned organization Palestine Action during demonstrations at an RAF airbase. The arrests occurred near the main entrance of Lakenheath airbase as part of a peace protest against military actions in Iran. The protest was sparked by media reports suggesting a US fighter jet downed in Iran had been stationed at the base.
The group Palestine Action remains proscribed, and the suspects were held on “suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation,” according to a police statement. They were taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for further inquiry. “Our role is to uphold the law impartially, regardless of future developments,” said the spokesperson, emphasizing the enforcement of legal standards.
“Where offenses are identified, appropriate measures will be applied,” the police added, highlighting their commitment to legal accountability.
While the High Court ruled the proscription of Palestine Action unlawful in February, it permitted the Home Office to appeal the decision, keeping the ban active until the outcome is resolved. The protests at Lakenheath were part of a six-day peace camp, which included a continuous vigil and is scheduled to conclude on Monday.
Suffolk Police also announced that two participants had been charged with obstructing traffic after setting up a blockade at the base on Saturday. The incident followed a speech by retired colonel Chris Romberg, which reportedly triggered the arrests. For more local stories, reach out to BBC News with your suggestions.
