Boy, 14, dies in e-bike crash with car as parents warn ‘this is reason why they are banned from the roads’
Teenager’s tragic e-bike accident sparks safety alert
A 14-year-old boy died following a collision between an electric motorbike and a car in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, prompting his family to issue a stark warning about the risks of riding such vehicles on public roads.
Collision on Newbold Road
Finley Dawson, 14, was operating an electric motorbike when it crashed into a Kia Sportage on Newbold Road last Thursday around 8:30pm. The impact sent him and his 15-year-old passenger, who was riding as a pillion, flying onto the road.
The injured boy is currently in hospital with serious but stable injuries, while Finley’s condition was described as ‘non-survivable’ after he was taken to the hospital following the crash. He passed away the next day.
Police investigation underway
Derbyshire police confirmed that the Kia driver is assisting with inquiries and has been classified as a witness. No arrests have been made at this stage.
“There is a reason these bikes are banned from the road, and devastatingly Finley has paid the ultimate price in losing his life,” the families stated in a joint message. “His friend has sustained serious injuries and has to come to terms with growing up without his best mate.”
They added that while electric motorbikes require riders to be 16 with a valid license for road use, pedal-assisted models can be operated by 14-year-olds as long as their power output remains below 250 watts.
